Instant-response Variometer – Gyroscope meets Barometer

With Version 5.0, Vario One revolutionizes the way a variometer responds to climb and sink. Through the intelligent combination of barometer, gyroscope and accelerometer, Vario One now detects thermals virtually without delay.

The problem with conventional variometers

Traditional variometers are based exclusively on measuring barometric air pressure. The fundamental problem:

Barometric measurements are inherently slow. It takes a moment before a change in altitude registers in the air pressure.

In practice this means: You’re already in the middle of the thermal before your vario even reacts. Weak thermals are missed entirely, and even with strong lift the signal lags behind reality. Every second of delay is a second in which you can’t center optimally.

The solution: sensor fusion

Vario One 5.0 uses the motion sensors of your iPhone or Apple Watch – gyroscope and accelerometer. These sensors capture vertical movement in real time, between the barometric measurements:

  1. Gyroscope – detects rotations and attitude changes instantly
  2. Accelerometer – captures vertical acceleration in real time
  3. Barometer – continues to provide the precise, calibrated long-term measurement

The barometer remains the reference for absolute accuracy. The motion sensors fill the gaps between barometric measurements and deliver the instant feedback you’ve been missing.

Overview of advantages

  • Instant response – the vario beeps as soon as you enter the thermal, not a second later
  • Earlier thermal detection – identify even weak thermals you would have completely missed before
  • Better centering – the faster feedback helps you center the thermal more precisely
  • Long-term accuracy maintained – the barometer continues to ensure correct, calibrated altitude values
  • No additional hardware – the sensors are already built into your iPhone and Apple Watch

Easy to activate

The new feature can be switched on and off in settings via the “Instant Beeping” toggle. This lets you decide for yourself:

  • On – sensor fusion active, instant response to climb and sink
  • Off – classic barometric mode for pilots who prefer the familiar behavior
