The resolution of the pressure socket - i.e. how quickly changes in air pressure are detected - varies depending on the hardware device. And the more precise the built-in sensor is, the faster a rise or fall is detected.
It is not necessarily the case that somewhat sluggish sensors mean that you cannot thermal as well. It lies strongly on pilot experience.
While a professional wants to hear the smallest changes acoustically in order to get the last performance out of the climb, a small delay is not a bad thing for beginners, as it allows them to reach the centre of the climb sooner and not immediately fall out of the thermal at the first beep.
